Can a good video card compensate for a slow processor?

I want to play some of the high end games that are out like Batman Arkham Asylum and Just Cause 2 but I only have an AMD 64 2.7Ghz processor (single core). If I buy a 1GB pci-express 16x graphics card will this compensate for my processor and let the games run smoothly?|||It does help if you have a good CPU but it is not essential. A good video card will make a big improvement if you only have a budget card at the moment.

There would be no point in buying a really expensive video card if the rest of the system is not up to it though.

Games like the ones you mention would run pretty well with just an Nvidia250gts or an ATI 5750/70.

The CPU you currently have is not that bad and is capable of running those games with the above cards.

Move up to a Intel core i3/i5 CPU system when you get the money and use the same video card until you can afford better.|||Having a good Video card will help compensate for a slower processor a little bit, however you also need a good processor, and enough ram to ensure that the Video Card will have enough work to do...in other words...it would be like running a car's engine without a spark plug if the processor is not good enough...the engine can produce more power, but because it doesnt have the spark plug a HUGE loss of power and stuttering will occur.|||No. That's what we call a bottleneck: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bottleneck

Example:

intel Pentium 4 3GHz & Radeon HD5870 1GB - CPU Bottleneck

intel Core i7 930 2.8GHz Quad Core & NVidia GeForce 6600GT 128MB - GPU Bottleneck

intel Core i5 750 2.66GHz & Radeon HD5830 1GB - No Bottleneck = Good System

If you are going to buy a powerful graphics card then you will need a CPU that doesn't restrict more powerful components and also if you are going to upgrade then you'll probally need a new power supply.|||I would look at the system requirements for the game you are trying to play to be honest. But if you would like to check if your system meets the minimum requirements for the game in question go here:
